The project is being advanced through a unique Indigenous-led collaboration between the Chiniki First Nation and the Treaty Six Confederacy, and represents a strong example of economic reconciliation in action, pairing Indigenous ownership and leadership with professional development expertise to deliver much-needed housing in a mature urban context.The development is envisioned as a mixed townhouse and mid-rise apartment community, designed to support a diverse range of households, including families, seniors, working professionals, and individuals seeking long-term rental housing.
A City-Endorsed Housing Initiative
The Summerlea Development Project was awarded through the City of Edmonton’s Surplus School Sites Program, a municipal initiative designed to repurpose underutilized former school lands for community-serving uses, with a strong emphasis on housing.Through a competitive selection process, the City identified this project as a strong fit for the program’s objectives, recognizing its ability to deliver much-needed residential density in a mature neighbourhood while advancing affordability, thoughtful urban design, and long-term community benefit.

Community Engagement
Community Open House Invitation
The project will proceed through the City of Edmonton’s development review process, including the submission of a Development Permit, alongside ongoing community engagement. Residents living in the Summerlea neighbourhood are invited to attend a Community Open House to learn more about the project, review the proposed plans, and share feedback.
